My Favourite View: Simon Bates, Smooth Radio

June 21st, 2011

Smooth Radio presenter Simon Bates has chosen the iconic Houses of Parliament as his favourite view of London:

“I love walking around London and taking snaps on my digital camera.  This is one of London’s most recognised images and it blows me away everytime I see it.”

Carrot-ter Building

If you were on the Millenium Bridge this morning you might have caught a great photo opportunity… Carrots being put through their paces by boot camp trainers!

Despite the weather, the brave carrots practised press-ups and lunges to get into shape for Carrots Nightwalk – a brand new fundraising event launched by Fight for Sight this week during National Eye Health Week.

Harry

“My favourite view of London is across the Thames at night. Big Ben and the London Eye look amazing when lit and I love walking down by the river and looking at all the sights”

Jessica

“The view down the River Thames from Tower Bridge. You can see the London Eye, the Oxo Tower and Big Ben to one side and the Gherkin and Canary Wharf to the other side. It’s especially beautiful driving over it on a summer’s night”

Sam

“My favourite view in London is the O2. I remember all the hype when the Millennium Dome opened, I go to so many concerts and events at the O2 and it’s great to see the Dome being used into the future”

My favourite view – Park Plaza London General Managers

June 9th, 2011

The Park Plaza London general managers share their favourite views of the capital:

Greg Hegarty, Park Plaza Regional General Manager UK

“This is was my first view of London before I went into the city, coming from Newcastle I had never seen a skyline like it before.  A truly amazing view with lots of nostalgia of when I first came down to work in the big smoke!”

Simon Mahon, General Manager Park Plaza County Hall

“This penthouse provides my favourite view. You can see Westminster, the houses of Parliament, the River, the London Eye, Canary Wharf, the City, Waterloo. It’s fantastic. So much of London, its history mixed with modern life, business mixed with pleasure. It never fails to amaze me.”

Pascale Fioretti, General Manager Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes

“Big Ben is London for me… I remember seeing pictures of the famous tower clock in my English school books and listening to stories about its “birth”!  I still remember how I felt the first time I walked out of Westminster tube station and found myself standing next to the massive edifice… It made such an impression on me and I still feels the same to this day, after 8 years in the capital!”

Andrew Swindells, General Manager Park Plaza Westminster Bridge

“Londoners are really lucky to have so many wonderful parks. My wife and I enjoy walking through the city’s beautiful gardens and it’s difficult to choose a favourite, but we particularly enjoy Regent’s Park where this shot was taken.”

Tips from the professionals

June 8th, 2011

Photographers and judges Nic Barlow and Barbara Chandler share their favourite views of London… and their tips on how to take a good picture:

Barbara Chandler

Barbara Chandler “Go out on your own to take photographs whenever you can – friends and family, however devoted, get fed up with hanging around. You either loose a shot…or have a row. And always keep an open photographic mind. You may be out looking for something in particular – but something else may come up on the inside – and you don’t want to miss it.”

Nic Barlow

“Consider photographing from a high point – it puts the subject in the context of its locality with a third dimension. Good to look at the subject from a different viewpoint.” Nic Barlow

Daniel Lezano

“This is St Paul’s Cathedral, captured on my Apple iPhone 4 on a beautiful spring afternoon earlier this year. I grew up living only five minutes away from this magnificent building, which is why I decided to make this my view of London.”
